Lesson: Astrology Basics

Genesis Astrology is science-based, not a belief system. As more is researched and proven, lessons will be updated. See the date of the latest revision to this lesson at the bottom of the page.

What is Astrology?

Astrology measures the relative positions of planets, asteroids, dwarf planets, and midpoints in relationship to each other at a given moment in time/space. For thousands of years, astrology has asserted a correlation between the relationships of bodies in the sky to events on Earth.

What is Trad Astrology?

Trad astrology in its various forms has been around since the Babylonians. Credit where credit is due—early astrologers across the world and across the millennia did a lot without any tech, using only the planets visible in the night sky and what they could note down on paper or clay.

Trad astrology has been much beloved, but it has never been consistently accurate enough to use as a real-time, real-world tool.

What is Genesis Astrology?

Genesis Astrology embraces the scientific model and only uses techniques proven to provide consistent accuracy through statistical research.

Genesis Astrology IS accurate enough to trust as a real-time, real-world tool.

Key differences between Trad and Genesis Astrology

Trad: Belief-based
Genesis: Research-based

Trad: One-dimensional
Genesis: Multidimensional

Trad: Must have birth time*
Genesis: Birth time not needed for accuracy

Trad: Myth-strology: If it means that in mythology it’s accurate!
Genesis: If it proves out in research, it’s accurate.

Unproven/Unused Trad Astrology Methods

These trad astrology methods don’t deliver consistent-enough results to be used in Genesis Astrology.

*The problem with birth times

Much of Trad Astrology rests on the birth time, but most people don’t know their exact birth time, even if they think they do. Here’s why:

1. There is no standardized medically accepted moment of birth.
2. Atomic time is relatively recent, clocks in the past weren’t reliably accurate.
3. Most birth times are recorded later after the delivery.
4. Many places don’t record birth times, or round them to nearest minute, or sometimes even the nearest hour.
5. Rectification, no matter who does it, is just someone’s guess and can never be verified.

The uncertainty of birth times undercuts potential accuracy in trad astrology.
You can’t do statistical research with unknown variables.
This leaves trad astrology pretty stuck in terms of advancement of techniques.

NOTE: Birth times are always used in Genesis Agrology when known. There is about 5-10% variation in interpretation with or without the birth time in Genesis Astrology.
Reminder: If birth time is unknown, omit using Moon. Better less data than inaccurate data.

The problem with signs

People love Sun Signs, and there’s simple and general advice that can be generated in Sun Sign astrology.
But need precise advice in high-stakes situations? Facts are these:
The original constellations are just not there anymore. Not where they were when trad astrology was born. The perspective from Earth has shifted and continues to shift. And they never were all of equal size.
>Use signs to describe planetary locations. Don’t use signs to describe people–people are much too complex. You need the whole multidimensional chart to understand yourself or anyone else.

The problem with houses

Without an accurate birth time, there are no accurately-calculated points. So no accuracy for Ascendant, IC, Descendent or MC.
Bottom line: Attaching meaning to something inaccurate just isn’t helpful.
And, no single trad astrology house system has proven itself superior to the many others.

Does Trad Astrology ever work?

We don’t rule out the possibility that a trad astrology technique could ever work.
We just focus our attention on the techniques proven to work consistently.
